Gifs are often referred to as 'figs' - well in my experience at least. Just as PNG are often called 'pings'

Yes Mike, You can use animated gifs in the avatars. Take a look at Bob Hahn's for example.

I did for some years. Too busy with bringing up a son and running a small business now - lost the touch. Still have my gear though.
