Continuing my fruit & veg theme from 2007 with the cheapest and most common fruit of the Tropics.
Australias' Banana industry is huge, we enjoy fresh high quality fruit all year round. However, Tropical Cyclone Larry devastated North Queenslands plantations in March 2006 to the tune of many millions of dollars. Although the plants grow quickly, the industry has only just recovered nearly 2 years later with fruit now selling at pre-Larry prices. What now costs us on average $2 per kilo, was much more expensive after TC Larry when NSW (New South Wales) banana stocks had to be shared with the North. Prices rose to more than $12 kilo at times, with the average being $7 per kilo for many months. Bananas were indeed a luxury for quite a while.
