I had a go at using the isometric grid and the 'snap to grid' feature a couple of years ago. I did this, but I did really struggle because I thought that whatever I drew being snapped to the grid would 'snap' correctly if I moved it around. It turned out that it didn't, so I had to turn off the snap and arrange stuff manually.
The option to turn 'Snap to object' on, is a good one.
But, as you say, it doesn't always behave itself.
I use it a fair, but, I get unacceptable results and end up turning it off, moving the point to where it should be, and then turning it back on again.
Pity it doesn't behave as well as a Xara tool should.

It's not perfect (my drawing skills rather than the grid...)
