I've uploaded the WD sitemap file to both the root as well as the public_html folders, but when I run a test in webmaster tools I get a 404 not found error.
Can anyone help?

I assume you have registered your site as a Property with Google's WebMaster Search console.
Have you checked against https://support.google.com/webmaster...topic=4581190?
Have you got the full URL path correct? You can get the detail with Xara's Control Centre access or a FTP viewer.

Yup - property registered and checked that topic.
AFAIK (using FileZilla,) can only upload to 2 possible locations - the root and the public_html folders.....?
public_html is the one, have you tried visiting it in a browser?
Really weird - type in www.deskleineibst.com/public_html and I get a 404!
All the Xara WD files are in that folder and the site works perfectly - so how come I get a 404?
Typed in www.deskleineibst.com/sitemap.xml and it's there but www.deskleineibst.com/public_html/sitemap.xml and I get a 404
Very frustrating
www.deskleineibst.com/public_html is never published hence the 404. The sitemap seems good so I don't know.

I will post a fresh thread to explain about folders as I think this subject often crops up and causes confusion.
Sculptex is correct. For example:
http://www.deskleineibst.com/sitemap.xml
http://www.deskleineibst.com
works perfectly.
