Default Buttons do not have to be...

Because of the limitations of most web authoring programs, navigation buttons are usually the same whether it's a rectangle, a rounded rectangle, an ellipse, etc. And they don't overlap.

    So I asked myself, WHY?

The buttons shown below and on the WEB file link to separate pop up layers. The mouseover effect for each button is actually on the popup layer. The button on the popup layer could be linked to another page or another link. The Contact button on the mouse over links to an e-mail address.

    Gary,
The problem is that the pop-up will display even before you mouse over the non-rectangler shape.

And the only way to avoid that limitation is to employ Flash (as far as I am aware).

Right, with Flash you can specify the shape of the object.

Even with the rectangle mouseOver limitation it would be a fun way of doing a kids site for example.

Unless you use the method I described here (second post): http://www.talkgraphics.com/showthre...t=38900&page=2
