Creating buttons from scratch -- what am I missing?

WebDesigner is pretty neat, but there seems to be some magic going on behind the scenes. I've tried to create buttons by putting a shape on the two default "mouse" layers and soft-grouping them but the button does not function. I've seen the layers naming / stacking order page, and I seem to be in compliance with that. Can anyone walk me through the steps?

A Few things you have to do:

1. Make sure that the MouseOff layer's button object has a link to something, even if it's just the index page itself. There has to be a link associated with the object for the MouseOver layer to fire.

2. On the MouseOver layer (you'll come across this soon enough), you need to group the text and the object (or at least group the text with itself), as text isn't rendered on the MouseOver layer - it has to be a graphic at that point.
