What games console do you own/want?
Right now all the console creators are busy. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is out and Halo 3 is approaching, Nintendo's Wii has just made its debut and Sony is trying to get the PS3 launched to secure its hold on the console market as well as the DVD market.
Do you own any of the current generation consoles? Or do you intend to buy the PS3?
What's your favorite console of all time, or do you prefer PC gaming?
Anyone can post in this thread and vote in the poll, even if you're not registered. But registering is recommended.

Ain't got any - don't want any.

Re: What games console do you own/want?
I have to agree with Intbel
I have never owned any of these. And I dont plan to buy any, Im not much for video games. I have plenty of other things to do. I did own an Atari once, ;) .
Whats wrong with a chess board ?

Re: What games console do you own/want?
Never owned a game console or even any PC game software.
If I'm at the computer I have Xara Xtreme Pro open. If I'm not at the computer I'm outdoors.

Re: What games console do you own/want?
No games here either... I mean the kids have a few fav's, but for us it's all about creativity, and or communication...

Re: What games console do you own/want?
I used to have Elite on the old BBC micro but I can't say I'm much of a gamer either.

Re: What games console do you own/want?
The only game console in our house is a Nintendo 64 (bought used) for the kids. The do have their Nintendo DSs, which they enjoy more than the console.
Had the wii been out in ample supplies, I might have (very maybe) bought it for them for Xmas.
As for gaming - always enjoyed Counter Strike and other Half-Life mods (on PC), but I really haven't booted up a game in 18 months or so. In fact when doing some maintenance on my main PC yesterday, even HL2 got uninstalled.
Will probably end up buying a console for myself once the dust settels with the PS3 release - probably an XBox 360 unless game developers can squeeze remarkable things out the PS3 (not very impressed so far). Then again, if what's top-of the line today in terms of video cards is less than a console...
Maybe it's just wishful thinking to hope for more time to spend on games. It's fun but not very productive. Ahhh, that time when getting 5 headshot kills while completely blinded by a flashbang on CS 'Office' - puts you me a good mood - and in a Xmas spirit! :p

Re: What games console do you own/want?
Clearly, you're all old :). Ive got a 360 but never play on it. I've got all nintendos consoles inc handhelds, and built a multi-thousand pound superPC for PC gaming. I'll get a Wii soon.

Re: What games console do you own/want?
None of these. I play games on a computer (PC/laptop).
A computer is more multi-functional compared to the console. So why bother paying so much for a console, I reckon :)

Re: What games console do you own/want?
My 12-year old son has dreams about getting a wii for Christmas but it looks like it won't happen. I waited two hours in a store lineup only to find the store only had three units to sell. No luck that day. At one point I was able to order one online from Sears Canada. Shortly thereafter they refunded my money and sent me a cryptic email to the effect that since they didn't know when they could fill my order they were cancelling it.
I just wish some store would take my order and then fill it when they are able. That way we could stop looking and just wait. It seems to me stores aren't run by very intelligent people!

Same with me, I agree.. I consider consoles for kids. BTW, if I play a game, because I'm not much of a gamer, it would be something like the Myst series or Siberia and I think these show to better advantage on a pc.

There are tons of stores who take an order and wait until stock arrives if the product is not available. You just had bad luck Ross.
My online shopping experiences have been great so far. Not only do we often find products for pretty much the lowest price in Canada (using sites like PriceCanada.com, PriceNetwork.ca, Shopbot.ca, etc.), we also order most outside the province which means we don't pay the 8% PST and often we're able to find a place were we don't need to pay shipping or at least very little. We also never had to send anything back (luck does play a role), but then again we only order from the most trustworthy stores.

Because nobody in their right mind would buy a console for any reason other than what games were available (although just looking around I question that). Consoles have games that a PC doesn't. And nobody would likely buy an expensive, fiddly PC for the sole purpose of gaming. It would be like buying a swiss army knife for just its knife just because you wanted to butter your bread.

I don't mean to be rude, but that's just silly. An analogy is to say a calculator is for kids because adults know how to do calculations by hand. In fact, Nintendo's Wii console is explicitly marketed and designed for families.
As far as I'm concerned, unless theres a specific title on some other console that you desperately want, the following has always applied: You need just two "consoles", a PC for games taking advantage of the latest technology and networking features etc, and a Nintendo console to play the finest most brilliantly conceived games available. That the Playstation is (or was) top dog is purely a marketing consequence; "playstation" is a buzz word that any old parent knows of, just as is "gameboy".

It's unusual to see someone come to the correct conclusion. Usually, people blame and cuss Nintendo for not having enough consoles available, rather than realising that they've been being made at a finite rate for a finite time, and shops just advertise them like there's unlimited stock and take your money, instead of being clear and realistic and only allowing a fixed SMALL number to pre-order.

Re: What games console do you own/want?
Xhris, yes, you're right, it is silly of me to say that, so I withdraw that remark, because I really don't know what I'm talking about. :o
It's just that if and when I see someone play on a console it's always a kid .. (I have a lot of friends with kids)

Re: What games console do you own/want?
Big stores like Amazon, Sears, BestBuy, Wal-mart & FutureShop aren't accepting orders for wii's. I personally wish they'd take all the pre-purchases customers are willing to make. I can wait until they can fill the order and am willing to pay now to get into a que. I think many frustrated shoppers would be too. That stores aren't, to me at least, is bad customer service. (They seem to just want you to come into the store 500 times to check on availability and hope you'll buy something else).
Amazon used to have a feature where they'd notify you when the product was available for purchase. At some point they decided to cancel that but didn't bother to advise all the people who had previously requested to be notified. Again, in my book that's bad customer service.
The hard part is the store flyers continue to advertise wii units even though they have no stock. To me that's unethical as those adverts get people to come to the store. Nintendo continue to put ads on TV promoting them even though there's already significantly more demand than they can supply.
The only store I've seen that is trying to help customers here in Canada is Zellers. Any wii units they get in through the week they save for a weekly draw. Customers can get a ticket. If your number is drawn you can buy one of those units. (You have to be in the store at the time of the draw). I participated in one. Close to 150 people showed up for a drawing of two units.
It's frustrating.

Yes but that's understandable seeing as it's their product. And furthermore, all the arrangements for each aspect of the product, in this case, advertising, were likely made and paid for well before it became clear that demand would outstrip supply.

Playstation 2 with Singstar :)

Re: What games console do you own/want?
I have played ALL the HalfLifes and love them all! I used to play HL online and used my same handle as here but hardly play at all since Xara came into my life.
I did just play (again) HL2 and Lost Coast tidbit.
I even just finished playing Mafia that a friend loaned me - another great game.
With all this recent game playing you can see why I haven't posted any drawings in a while. :)
In the past I have also played all of the Lara Croft Tombraider games, some on PS and some on PC. Another great series of games.

Re: What games console do you own/want?
BlueFlare -- My wife waited in line at Wal-Mart this morning for 3 hours. The lineup was waiting for the Wal-mart's mid-day courier delivery & the possibility of buying a Wii. My wife started out as eighth in line. Some of the people ahead of her had been there for more than two hours before her. As the wait progressed some folks ahead of my wife dropped out and she ended up fourth in line. Eventually the courier delivery was made and there were no Wii's in it. The first few people in line had waited more than five hours for nothing. Apparently this is happening frequently -- customers having to wait because of the first-come-first-serve policy without knowledge that there will even be any to buy. I find it hard to believe that Wal-mart don't have some delivery schedule to know what is on-route & where. They must be able to serve their customers better than that. I know they aren't responsible for the low supply or the high demand. Still they can manage things better than that.
Why don't they just let customers pre-purchase? You'd pay for a unit even though its officially back-ordered, and you pick it up as soon as they can fill the order. Wouldn't that be better? I wouldn't care if I was on a list with thousands of other customers -- at least I get the product when it is available without wasting my time. The amount of time we've spent waiting significantly exceeds the value of the actual product.
Zeller's raffle at least allows shoppers to do something other than wait in line. And they've been saving up their supply for weekly raffles so at least you know you can go in one day and have a shot.

Re: What games console do you own/want?
I have a digital step counter and my only game is to see if I can increase the number of steps in a given time in my daily walk, (well, it’s a sort of computer)
My kids, (who are all old enough not to be called baby goats anymore) have largely abandoned the consoles and P.C.’s for more interesting pursuits than chasing pixels around a screen with the view to killing them, and thankfully, without any insistence by me, become involved in rather more interesting things such as boy friends, girl friends, socialising, swimming, running and university life generally.
Computers and offshoots have been around most of there lives and so hold little or no more interest for them than the television or the toaster.

Update to my vote... Add a notch for Nintedo wii for me. Didn't get one yet - as they sell out faster than they can stack them. Will get one for the "kids" ;) as soon as I can get my hands on one... :) Lots of Playstation 3s piling up in Montreal... :p
My wife's nephew brought in his wii over Christmas and it's the most fun I have seen with a "video game" - ever! Grandma (74) bowling... Grandpa (82) golfing... Oh, my goodness that was fun!

Re: What games console do you own/want?
I didn't get my hands on a Playstation 3 at launch. I tried to stand in line for one, but I don't see the point any more in standing in line for 3 days. I guess I am just getting too old for that, so I planned on waiting several months later when there is more stock available. I am not a hardcore gamer or anything, but I do enjoy playing games from time to time. Since I was going to wait for the PS3 to come more available I decided to buy a 40 in. Sony Bravia XBR3 HD television 3 weeks before Christmas. The next week I went to Walmart to do some last minute Christmas shopping and I spotted the PS3. It was the last one they had and I immediately purchased it. :D I was supposed to get my television that day, but I am glad I didn't or I would of been messing around with the TV and never been shopping that day. I did own a PS2, but I sold it and bought another controller. I love the oneline gaming, watching Blu-ray movies and surfing the internet on the big screen. The picture quality is amazing! The Playstation 3 is just not for kids it's an all in one system for everyone. Christmas was good to me this year, but the down side was that I spent way to much money on myself. Man, I hate when that happens. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The Alien has got it 100%. I can play anything from old Doom/Quake to mindless Bejeweled on my PC, plus everything else that I need to do for work.
Although, to be honest, I haven't actually played much in quite a while. Time marches on!

Personal i don't see anything wrong i have a PS2 and love it. I have not got a third genration console yet but i hopefully will in the future.
The two that stand out and personal feel are the best, purely because of the styles of games i like, for me are the Wii and PS3. On the PS3 The Gran Turismo series,GTA series and Need For Speed Series (certian ones). On Wii Zelda and and a others (which i can't think of now :o )
Overall i think that the PC is the best gaming platform in preformance but you can't get the game series i like on them on the PC so i guess i will need to buy the third genration consoles to get them.
Oh well need to start saving.

Hehe,. I had it on my C=64 and couldn`t stop playing it.
Compared to nowaday standards it looked awfull, but in those days,
it was the best. (gameplay was ace)
The sad thing is, not many spacegames left. The ones that are out there,
I mostly have, but the choice is very thin.:(
