FTP error: Timeout was reached
Hi. I have had Xara Web Designer for over 10 years.
I have just upgraded to Version 16
I have not changed any of my settings, now I get FTP time out every time I try to upload my site.
I know its not the FPT credentials, I have uploaded the site via Filezilla.
Can't imagine what's going wrong.
Please help.
I was working just fine...
Thanks, David

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
I haven't got a answer for you but will be watching for answered as I have the same problem and always assumed it was because I have a really slow internet connection:banghead:
-
Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
I get the same. I think it is from a slow server. Are you using Xara hosting?
-
Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
David - Has this just started happening since you went with Web Designer 16?
-
Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Also check you're running as Administrator.
-
Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
David, as described, this can be nothing to do with Xara as you are using Filezilla.
Are you therefore exporting to the same folder? Does that folder have the right permissions?
When Filezilla is connected, can you see both the local filestore folder and the server destination files?
Have you updated Filezilla recently?
If you have upgraded, do you still have the prior version installed? Does this still work with Filezilla?

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Dear All, thanks for your thoughts.
I have a really fast internet connection. Virgin
I am using Fasthosts - have done for years.
I also have a site which is hosted by GoDaddy. Now, the FTP with that is okay...
This issue happened before 16 upgrade. I thought by upgrading it, it might 'clear' the blockage!
Running as administrator? Tried that, makes no difference
Filezilla. I actually exported the whole site from Xara to HTML. Then separately upload the site via Filezilla FTP.
Any more thoughts, much appreciated.

So the issue is with your Filezilla setup. You need to check what the credentials and path are with your provider.

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Hi Acorn, apologies it's not Filezilla, I used WinSCP.
Not sure how this changes to issue of Xara time outing.
I exported the Xara site to HTML (onto my desktop)
Then using the exact same FTP credentials updated the site. This is more a sort of backup, plan B way of updating my site.
I'd still prefer the use the more direct approach, ie uploading updates in XARA
I have had a word with Fasthosts to see if they have done anything to their FTP system.
As it's the same issue with all of my sites hosted by Fasthosts.
I have other sites that I design on Xara and then upload via FTP to GoDaddy. These work fine and do not give the Time out error.
Many thanks

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
If using 3rd party FTP software works, and Xara works with different ISP, then it figures that the settings in Xara for Fasthosts are incorrect. Have you tried different security settings?

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Thanks for that suggestion Chris M.
I tried all three settings available (FTP, FTPS and SFTP) - still timed out.
I checked to see if my Public IP address was blocked - nope, it's fine.
I started a new, fresh Xara file/page and punched in all the credentials. Same thing. time out.
Fasthosts have asked for a log from Xara...via regedit. So they can look closer into the issue.
Any other thoughts greatly appreciated.

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
FYI - Tried this, also no joy
PORT NUMBER
Xara will publish to port 22 by default when uploading via SFTP, and 21 for FTPS. This is the default port for secure FTP connections however some hosts may change this for security reasons.
In order to publish to a custom port, simply enter colon and the port number at the end of the FTP address.
CONNECTION DETAILS
Some hosts may have different connection details for SFTP than standard FTP, and others may support one type of secure connection and not the other.
Please confirm with your host what type of secure connection they support and what your details are for it. If you try to connect using the right details, but wrong connection type then it's likely you will receive a timeout or similar error.
Any other thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks Acorn. It's a regular problem peeps seem to stumble across. Maybe if it can be resolved the Mods could make a sticky thread?

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Still, no joy with this FTP timed out error.
Thanks, Egg for the links. Nothing conclusive.
I've noticed that the site also, do not 'Export the Document'.
Normally when you click on Publish to the Web, Xara Exports the Document first (small progress bar pops up in the bottom left of the Xara screen).
This does not happen any more with any of my sites that got straight to FTP timed out.
I tried loading Xara onto another Windows Machine (connected to the same internet) Same problem.
Fasthosts, say there is no problem form their side.
I have a ticket for a Magix Support, so far not a word...
Any other ideas?

It will be quicker and more productive if a Mod could flag this for Rob-Xar. He ought to sort things out for you.

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Do you have any 3rd party AV suites with a firewall? If so, try temporarily disabling the firewall.

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Hi Teeser, can you follow the instructions below and send me the log file when you have it? (PM probably is easiest). I can reply here again after receiving the log file
1) Close Xara - Important! (effects of below will not take effect if the program is open)
2) Go to start, type "run" and press enter. Type "regedit" and press enter.
3) On the left hand side, please navigate to the following key:
64bit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Xara\WebDesignerPremium x64\16\Options\Publish
4) Right-click on the Value "FTPTrace" > Edit > Change the value to "1".
5) Close the register then open this program and keep it running: http://live.sysinternals.com/Dbgview.exe
6) Run Xara and try to publish again. Debugview will capture information, when it times out, please go to File > Save as and send me the log file so we can see what is happening?
Thanks
Rob

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Thank you for your log file. Can you try the below and see if that helps?
1) Close all Xara programs. (Important! the changes won't be made or have any affect on the program if it is open, and values would be overwritten when you close it.)
2) Go to Start > Run and type regedit then click OK.
3) Navigate to the registry key for the version of program you are using:
64bit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Xara\WebDesignerPremium x64\16\Options\FTPLibcURL
4) Change the value ConnectTimeout, LoginTimeout and ResponseTimeout to "20000" (this is the time in miliseconds, so this would be 20 seconds).
5) Close the registry and open Xara
Does the problem now appear?
Thanks
Rob

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Hi Rob, I changed: LoginTimeout and ResponseTimeout to "20000".
No difference still timed out on FTP.
An interesting thing.
I loaded Xara onto another machine (iMac Using Parallels)
Using my Virgin Broadband on wifi - Same issue - Timed Out
Using my EE (Hotspot wifi frim Phone) - Worked Perfectly
Tried using my EE Wifi on my Main Win10 PC - Timed out
Thought please... Tks

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
I just spent a long time with this same timeout problem. I finally got it fixed after using the process of elimination. What I ended up doing was to delete the webhost ftp account I set up and created another one, but with the EXACT SAME SETTING. Now it works (so far). It seems to have been some hidden glitch in the ftp account set up.
The way I got to this solution was to use another ftp account at the same host, and I kept all the other details unchanged. Same PW, same subdirectory, same server-host. That worked. So there was no other option. That's when I just deleted the first ftp account and set it up fresh. So although nothing visible changed, it's working right now.
The optional sub-folder aspect isn't explained too clearly, but on Bluehost for an addon domain, I have to enter in the sub-folder box: /public_html/(folder name).

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Ah sorry for the delay, caught up in lots and lots of stuff lately.
Interesting it worked from your phone and not broadband, could possibly mean something local to your network is blocking the upload, such as a firewall..
I have seen very occasionally an ISP block certain IP's, maybe if all else fails could contact them to check if its blocked

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
I'm new to Xara Web Designer and have the same fault when uploading to GoDaddy. I wondered whether it is possible to upload pages individually or in small groups; the theory being they would be uploaded before being timed-out. And will they work after individually being uploaded? Is there anyone with any relevant experience out there?
-
Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Typically the timeout isn't the time taken for the whole upload, it's the time taken to establish communication, so the size of the upload is irrelevant.
-
Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Don't know if this will be of any help... (nothing to loose) but the same was happening to me... And the solution has nothing to do with Xara or any FTP client...
I could not read nor upload anything to one my hosting companies... Bluehost. But could read the site with my phone data. (Wifi turned off) Called them many times
was getting nowhere until one agent kinda laughed and said NONE... of what any of the other agents told me was right and the problem was coming from my ISP...
which by the way is COMCAST.
He said they have a 'security' feature that's preventing me from accessing my host. The fact that I could read it with my phone data proves it not "us".
"Call the and tell them exactly that and stand firm. Don't let them push it back to us."
Sure enough... Two Comcast agents did exactly what he said they would do.... "push it back to them." I insisted on a manager and got a gal who said "yes, he was
correct." She showed me where in my Comcast settings I could disable the security feature and BAM! Done!
So who knows? Maybe it's you ISP??? Hope you get this resolved...
Cliff
PS.... I still get an occasional time-out... but rarely. And if it won't fix.. I just reboot Xara and all good.
-
Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
But it has already uploaded say 23% so communication is already established.

My experience exactly... It would begin... appear to be uploading established connection as you said) and then..... TIME-OUT...
I don't pretend to understand... I'm just saying what I experienced... and it was my ISP. That's all.

thats a [ often somewhat arbitary] measure of the whole process which, as ss-kalm pointed out, begins with trying to establish a connrection... if that fails after a certain number of tries/time, it will timeout, and could well be showing at [say] 23% depending on how long the failed attempt took measured [ again not necessarily accurately] against what was expected
I'd agree with Rob-Xar and others, it's most likely a security issue, either firewall or other setting, that could be on your computer/network[router], or your host, or your ISP

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
When you do a full web site preview, where does Xara put the files? I wondered whether they could be uploaded with FileZilla which has never let me down. At the moment I have been using File - publish website....

Xara creates a folder in %localappdata%/Temp/; instead, you just perform a Website Export and FTP that folder's contents.

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
If you are going to use FileZilla Use Website export, I export to folder on my desktop called website easy to find and all files are right there to upload

Re: FTP error: Timeout was reached
Hi Guys,
Did anyone find a solution?
I am now getting "FTP error: Timeout was reached".
I have been uploading several websites (in one case for a number of years) with no problem. I cannot update my websites, which are time critical as they involve sending ut dates and times of events.
I use IONOS (used to be 1&1) there tech help could not solve the issue. This issue renders the whole of XARA useless for my purposes so a solution is critical.
I can export the website to a folder and that works just fine, so presumably the problem is upstream of the physical process of XARA creating the code.
I loaded the exported files to the server using Filezilla - no problem. So somethinng diferent between and the ISP (1&1)
Help please!
Martin

My sites are hosted with IONOS without any issue, although third party addons like the WOW slider have to be uploaded directly to the host (using WinSCP in may case).
You are welcome to post a small sample XAR doc that fails and I can check if it uploads to my IONOS. FYI: I am on v16.3.
