How many times have you used the Eraser Tool in AI CS4? very few I bet. I find that I use the Pathfinder Tool much more frequently than the eraser. Now if you had said let go for a improved Combine Shapes Tool or menu I might have agreed with you. Even having said that again the number of times that I use the extra options in Illy's Pathfinder Tool is again is very small.
I could see an eraser tool being useful if it worked with a pen tablet. My wacom Graphire3 for example can be turned upside down to erase just like a pencil, if the feature exists within the program.
I honestly thought this was easier than it turned out to be.
I thought if I drew something and did a CTL-4 Slice, it would be OK.
Apparently NOT. Is there a way to do this with the swirl?
Convert the swirl (line) to shape, select swirl and rectangle, press Ctrl+2
But this isn't the forum to discuss such things, only to register your vote for a feature.
How is an eraser better or easier than simply selecting a vector line and either delete the entire line or the nodes you want to remove?
In a raster application like photoshop you must erase because everything is simply a matrix of pixels with a colour assigned.
A vector is simply a direction and length. Of course on screen it must be represented by raster because the screen can only function that way. In the program there is no matrix to erase. Code to recalculate the various vectors after an 'erase' operation would add to the program size with little to no benefit over current functionality.
What Frances proposes would actually speed things up for those who draw freehand - basically if you turn the pen round then nodes are automatically deleted if you run the eraser end over them - without the need to select them first
With close un-smoothed lines marque selection of nodes is often clumsy and imprecise, and click select tiresome and slow
Its a different approach - whether it would be practical in xtreme is another matter...
Using the Freehand and Brush Tool you can hold down a Shift key to switch to the eraser. You must do this before releasing the left mouse button as you draw.
yes Bill
but an eraser tool that is not ;):)
No, it's a rubber...
but only for what you have just drawn - as Bill says
look at this from the point of view of freehand drawing - THAT IS IS AN UNDO TOOL not an eraser
+1
Eraser tool is useful to me too, to speed up the process.
I think we are all trying to improve our beloved prog here.
It's up to Xara team what to implement first etc.
I guess I never thought of Xara as much as drawing as painting.
If you wanted something done a specific way, you would be able to paint over the spot you wanted to change.
This made me think there's no need for an eraser when you're painting.
Plus the ability to slice parts of objects means you can "erase" anything you need, right?
there is when you are doing watercolor - its called a sponge ;)
speed is the thing here - having to make dozens of small corrections in the boolean way is really tiresome.... :D
I agree an eraser would speed up our work dramatically.
Erasing and adding to objects
I think Xara should lets us to have a "virtual" eraser to our drawing, letting us to remove portions of selected object on an individual layer or across multiple layers.
The flipside of erasing is "adding to" (i.e., augmenting), a technique to add or "grow" a vector objects' boundaries—great for reshaping an existing object or to grow a vector shape from scratch. This may be especially useful when creating an unusual filled shape.

With the new pressure sensitivity and free hand tool improvements a real eraser tool would be a perfect match. When you draw with a pencil on paper you can turn the pencil upside down and use the eraser. A tablet pen can do the same thing if the feature exists.
here is some more on this
An eraser would make life easier for sure. +1 vote..
Actually, is there any way on these boards that we can rank the suggestions in Dear Xara in terms of how desperately they're wanted?
A kind of top 10 most wanted features.
It could help Xara to prioritise what they develop.
Please note post#5 and the Dear Xara.. forum sticky.
Xara already prioritizes their development according to their own internal wish list. I do believe they check the Dear Xara forums.
An internal wish list isn't the same as listening to your consumers.. and a top 10 wishlist for example could help them prioritise.
At the moment, they won't know how much support a 'dear xara' post has with other users. It could be something everyone would be delighted to have or only of use to one person.
The internal wish list consists of customer requests and their plans for their applications. At least this is how it has been portrayed in past posts by Xara staff.
Their are many users of Xara software that are not members of Talkgraphics. They convey their requests through other means to Xara Group Ltd. and they do it as individuals.
Who would you suggest maintain such a top 10 list? Moderators are not paid for their participation at Talkgraphics. We volunteer some of our personal time.
It would not be a definitive universal list by any means, as feedback comes from many sources like you say. It would just be additional info for Xara from their biggest userbase to help them judge where to spend money.
Regarding how the top10 would be maintained, this could probably be done via a sticky poll every now and then based on what's been through the dear xara in the last few months. That would probably be the easiest way?
If you think this would still take a surprising amount of time, I'd be happy to put my money where my mouth is and maintain it or help a moderator to.
If anyone else feels this would be valuable, feel free to wade into the debate ;)
Hi everyone,
The purpose of Dear Xara.. forum is to provide an area where the Xara developers can quickly gauge what the users of Xara software at TG are asking for without having to read through lengthy discussions where further ideas and feature requests enter the topic and debating just clouds the OT.
We have other boards where discussions and opinions are welcome.
Please simply give the thumbs up or a +1 if you think the OP's suggestion or request is one which you also would like Xara to consider adding.
If the feature is not one which interests you it would better not to post in this forum, help Xara help you by keeping the Dear Xara.. forum simple.
Thanks
By "not one which interests you", do you mean "don't care one way or the other"? If not, how do you suggest that we vote "no"?
What works for some users may be a hindrance for others (eg, the multi-layer clipboard). It seems to me that both pro and con should be heard. :)
But of course you should say "no" if you prefer not to have the feature implemented.
You shouldn't post in case if you don't really care if the feature will be implemented or not. :)
Hi,
Perhaps a uservoice account or something similar for suggestions would be useful.
People vote on the idea, the most popular stays on top...
Could be an easy way to see what's in demand.
Ehh... Yes an eraser Tool!!!
Marc
+1 for this idea
+1. If well implemented.

Would be very useful. Plus, the community will probably find a hundred other ways to use it!

I think it would be very useful.

As long as vector objects remained vector objects after being partially erased.
