I just installed XX (disc1)
Inserted disc2 opened and tried to open the first .avi (I wanted to start reviewing the movie how tos')The "open with" window popped up....I selected Xara appl.(Which is one of the offerings) A pop up said "file not recognized by any installed filters".
I opened Xara and tried click on help....the same answer came up.
Can someone clarify ? Do I need other filter/
filters to be installed? If so where are they obtained?
I didn't try opening in any other program ie: Photoimpact.

Tom - Sorry to read you are having problems. The .avi files cannot be opened in xara or very many other programs. The most common application they are associated with is Windows Media Player. You could check to see if it is on your system. Perhaps the easiest way would be to right click on one of the .avi files in the file explorer and choose "open with...". That should bring up the same little window where you incorrectly chose Xara before. This time look for "Windows Media Player". If it is there also click the little box that says something about always using the application to open that file type.

If you don't have Windows Media Player installed you can probably install it from your Windows cd. - Or you can download the latest version from Bill Gates here.

I hope this has been of some assistance. You're going to love those movies when you get to see them

Welcome to the xara forums! As you know from your "lurking", your participation is welcome and encouraged by all.

Regards, Ross

.avi files are usually played by Windows Media Player. "Start>Programs>Accessories>Multimedia>
Media Player" Or something like that if you are using Windows 98 (I run Windows 2000). Maybe someone else will post the true location. Or you can go to Microsoft and download Media Player 7 here:

Good luck and welcome
