I'm exporting my files as *.tif @ 600 dpi as Gary is doing it. Works great with sizes up to 3 x 4 feet. The advantage: any printing co can print a tif, they don't need the fonts, you don't have to convert the fonts to lines, no hassle at all.
Another alternative I'm using is as follows: I install a Linotronic Printer driver on my machine, with a port 'file'. The I print the document 'to file' selecting the Linotronic printer. This will create a *.ps or *.eps file, which you can open with (free) Ghostscript and GSView, a postscript interpreter. With this great utility you can perform a final check and even print your *.ps or *.eps to your bubble jet or PCL non-postscript printer. If the result is what you had in mind, you can send the file to your printing co.
Over here most printing cos import the *.eps or *.ps into Quark, PageMaker, InDesign or Illustrator and print from there. The RIP will do the rest.
Ghostscript is available here
GSView (the frontend for Ghostscript) is available here
GSView is shareware, but it's worth every single cent. Should be around US$ 30 now. 30 days trial period.
These tools will save you a lot of time and put you to the safe side.
An additional benefi: you can generate sleek PDF documents with Ghostscript. Or convert PDF documents to CAD, EPS, AI etc...
