I suspect it can be done, but not very easily and certainly not automatically. It looks like the visualization of one of those mathematical fomulas.
You would have to create a series of blends of large ellipses narrowing down to smaller ones to create the tunnel effect and then create blends of small ellipses to the larger elliptical paths.
Maybe Ross or Eric can give it a try :-)

noon,
I am sure this is possible in Xara X but I have not worked out how yet .
Attached is my attempt at creating this shape. Although I did not get that close, I hope my images might give you some ideas.
I have just tried to create the tunnel effect rather than copying all the colours.
The method I used was:
1 Create two circles
2 Blend between them
3 Draw a circle (or ellipse) and attach the blend to it
4 Convert the blend to editable shapes and make a small copy of it
5 Blend between the big and small shapes
6 Draw a small spiral
7 Attach the blended shape to the spiral
8 Play with the blend settings to get the right effect
(unfortunately my example pictures were not as good as the main pictures but the steps were the same)
Hope this helps
Jonathan

Or Johnathan :-)
This got me to thinking and whereas I think recreating the effect would take a tremendous amount of time, I did try something like this using some of Tony Roberts' Mould Shapes found in the XaraXone Shareware Page.

I've tried messing about with this and this is the best I can come up with so far. I think it's a bit to complicated to create using blends or molds alone tho.

That seems to be going in the right direction.
The ellipses appear to wrap around a 3D model in the original image and what you ave come up with also appears to do that.

I tried recreating the image in XaraX, but I eventually decided I was stumped. Apart from recreating every circle individually I couldn't find an easy method of producing a similar image. I eventually came to the same conclusion as yourself. ie the original was a texture on a 3D shape.
So thats exactly what I did myself. I created a blend on a circle in XX. Copied & reduced it in size, the blended both circles.
That gave me the texture I was after. I then opened Xara3D imported a ring, beveled and applied the texture.
By then exporting a bitmap copy, making this the background texture, increased the size of the shape, then exported this. Repeated this about 4 times.

Here's the ring with the texture applied within Xara3D
