"Killer" because I lost about 2.5 hours work. I had my new QSL card done and had grouped all elements. Was moving a copy around on the page to do a "4 up" for printing and got an error message (which I didn't write down) - Xara crashed back to desktop. File size now 57 bytes and everything lost. No running backup of course.

Writing this on secondary computer. Turned main one off right away.

Anyone have any ideas about possible recovery efforts?

Don't have Xara on this PC so can't research the following. Some MS products have an option you can set that will make an automatic *backup* (not just save current) so that you have a copy to recover from. Anyone know if Xara has something like this?

Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated.

    Paul,

Check your Windows/temp folder for the same file name but with a .bak or .tmp extension.

If you're lucky and its there - rename it filename.xar and try and open it.

    Alan,

THANKS!!!!! It was there and recoverable! I probably should have thought of doing that but was upset enough that I just turned the PC off and went to bed.

Needless to say, I will get back in the habit of saving working copies as I go.

    Thanks again.

I still think an auto backup feature would be nice!

I don't know if this was said before, but it's worth bringing up again. It was mentioned in the other thread that you can save your files incrementally (ie filename1, filename2, filename3) so you don't lose you only copy should Xara somehow corrupt the file. If you are too lazy to do this, and if you're willing to muddle in the windows registry, there is an option that will backup your previous copy (to filename.bak) everytime you save:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\XaraX\Version 3.0\Options\Filters
Change "MakeBakFiles" from 0 to 1

Thanks for the registry trick too. I have done this also.
