I feel like a total doofus, but I can not figure out what you did. I tried to follow your steps selecting the shapes individually, but when I select the blend, both shapes are selected, but then I can't select just one. I hit the tab key, but nothing happens. What am I possibly missing?

No I'm the doofus! I steered you wrong ol'buddy! Ctrl-clicking will select an original shape in the blend. When one is selected, the tab key will allow you to select the other one in the blend.
When playing with such blends it is fun to play with varied transparency settings and complex gradient fills. Also don't set the blend steps too high or it will start taking a long time to process. (Note when there are way too many steps it can seem like it has locked up but if you are patient eventually it will display).
