    Hi Jens.

I'm playing in Mandrake Linux right now and I am VERY interested in running Sodipodi, there is a new version out (0.31.1.0) and it's looking better and better. Unfortunetly I can't get the thing to install. There is a dependency issue and I can't find the rpm's. You, I know, run a different flavor but I was hoping that you might know of a place where I could find the following files:

    libgnomeprint-2.so.0 and
    libgnomeprintui-2.so.0

I have similar packages on my install disks but they are not what the system is wanting. I am now running Mandrake 9.1 and it's absolutley flawless, except for this!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

    Thanks very much Jens! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Looks like I got the thing under control. In case anyone is playing with Mandrake Linux as well as I am then here is the link directly to a version that works. Text does NOT work though, so don't be surprised if you try it out and you don't get any! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

    ftp://mandrake.redbox.cz/Mandrake/9....-1mdk.i586.rpm

Have fun. It ain't XaraX but it's pretty darned fun to play with. So great dialogs for transparency and different fill effects. Very good. And it is written by just 2 people, amazing!!

usually you will run Linux with one of the two mainstream desktops: Gnome or KDE. KDE is used more often, and if you decided to run KDE the Gnome libraries will not be installed. No, I don't run any of the desktops, I'm running BlackBox (http://blackboxwm.sourceforge.net/).

But Sodipodi requires Gnome libraries, because it has been coded with these libs.

Check if you can install from your Mandrake the Glib and GTK libs - you don't need the developer stuff, just the libs to run the apps.

After you will have installed the libs you should be able to work with text as well.

I guess you've tried to compile Sodipodi, gave up and installed the RPM for Red Hat. Unfortunately, the RPM for Red Hat inherits a different directory structure <sigh>. SuSE and Mandrake feature an almost identical directory system, whereas RH doesn't stick to the standard. This is the reason why your RH installation can't locate the fonts on your system...

If you can get a RPM for SuSE you won't have any problems.

My suggestion: use the Mandrake rpm manager to uninstall Sodiipodi, then go to the directory where you tried to compile Sodipodi and do a make -uninstall to get rid of the rest. Now you should have a clean system and install the GLIB and GTK libs. The try a SuSE rpm for Sodipodi.

You might check google for rpmfind or go directly to rmpfind.com - usually they offer a link to the version you are looking for.

Just checked the rpm's offered by sourceforge.net: there is one for your Mandrake Linux:

    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/s...-2mdk.i586.rpm

And if you want to check additional plug-ins etc, go here:

    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sodipodi/

    tons of information are here:

    http://www.gnome.org/gnome-office/sodipodi.shtml

BTW, the mdki586.rpm is compiled for a standard system. I guess you know that you will achieve the best performance if you compile an app directly on your individual machine, because in this case you will get an i686 version that hooks to your specific CPU, RAM modules, Cache etc.

And please don't dl and try to compile a src.rpm or a cvs version unless you **know** what your are doing ;-} . All I can say: the src and cvs drove me MAD like hell.

BTW - for the rest of you: there is even a version for Windows. Check it out at

    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/s...n32-0.30.1.exe

If you should have any questions, let me know.

I know it's a bit confusing when you run into that page constantly. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Here's the deal with that. One of the guy's (Lauris Kaplinski) that is coding/writing/creating Sodipodi is basically on strike. So hence the "Darkness" pages.

I signed up for the email list (which is a bit stupid but I guess it works for some people. A regular forum setting would be better, IMHO! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif ) and I started getting the emails right away (not that many) Most of them were politically based, about Lauris protesting the war effort (something about free software and the connection it has to the 'stupid war' as he states it) and so production on parts of the software are haulted for the time being.

My personal responce was that stopping production on something that brings him joy is 'counter productive' and he should look for a new outlet for his anger. If the whole world did that sort of nonsense then we would be dead in the water, so to speak. Others are in agreeance but it's his call.

So the application is good but there are MANY bugs in it really needs some attention here and there (I have NO fonts to work with, it's not pointing to the right directory and I haven't gotten around to finding where the main files for Sodipodi are kept so I can open up the main file and find the line and change it to the Fonts directory (nice thing about open source, you can do that! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif ). It's a good program though and I hope he finds a different outlet for this anger and gets back to work on his "baby". It sure has got Sketch and Karbon14 (KDE based) drawing programs beat all to hell and back!! So I really hope this doesn't last too to long!!

Just my 2 cents (crap, one more thing to figure out, I can't do the cents sign in LInux using the number pad! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif )

I was wondering if you could relate a simple compilation method for getting the program intergrated completely into the system better?? That may fix my fonts issue.

Would I download the src instead, I have it but I'm rusty and forgot how to compile. Sigh.......... I guess it's homework time! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

    Thanks Jens http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

    Hey Jens,

Many thanks, I already checked that one out.
    1) It's expensive and
    2) The development is on hold.

So I decided not to deal with it. So I decided to take their advice and try out Sketch again. As it's turned out there is a beta out (0.7.12) and I've joined the mailing list and I'm hoping for some help on an istallation issue. Sodipodi is more a political thing right now so it's not worth it to me to go with something that's totally been put on hold for reasons not remotely related to the software, too to bad!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif So looks like it's Sketch. It's free and it does a hell of lot more than it looks like from a casual glance.

Needs anti aliasing and some other things like more control over the blends but I think that it's been in development. I am running 0.6.15 right now. Fonts are available, some control over the fills, nodes editing and many plugins that give it much much more productivity like cut, group, subtract and all that stuff. Plugins also include autoshapes, path utilities, text on curves and a couple more. So you might check it out:

    http://sketch.sourceforge.net/index.html

Thanks for getting me motivated to check into vector progs for Linux a bit more. It's not really useable, too to much in that respect but I think FINALLY that Linux has a real chance and I think more folks and more software companies may start looking at porting their apps to this extreamly stable environment.

    Just another 2¢ http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
