you might search for the free Wings 3D and start modeling with it. Gidgit might be able to help you - he mastered this app. I'm not sure if you need a separate raytracer for Wings or not.
Once you master the app, all you need is imagination. Do some blobs, blurbs, metaballs, hypernurbs or whatever it's called, tweak and twist, texture and render them, and you'll have identical results.
Unfortunately I don't have enough imagination for this kind of stuff, I'm more technically and real life oriented, but I can imagine to use my apps and play some hours to come up with similar results.
I don't know if Cinema (www.maxon.com) still has the offer for the free version. It's limited only in render size, the rest is flawless. You might try this one as well.
