Hi Chuck,
I wasn't sure what shtml was either, so I did a search and found out they deal with Server Side Includes. A tutorial for SSI can be found here.

that if a page is to execute a CGI script eg in Perl, most servers require you to call the file .shtml - this tells the server to look for the call of the script.
Thus only use .shtml if the page really does have a script otherwise it will slow your site.
