    Hi Richard,

My LCD is a 17 inch model, set to 1024 x 768. The max resolution is 1280 x 1024 at 75Hz. It supports true 32bit colour depth. The footprint is very small, especially compared to the 19 inch CRT monitor I was using.

Dave - so far no stuck pixels. But it's only one week old, so who knows what may happen at some point in the future. I had one of the first LCD portable TVs and it developed some stuck pixels after a couple of years. I also spent about 30 minutes tweaking the colour, gamma, etc to get it to my satisfaction.

When my workstation died with a mother board failure, I bought an HP system that came with an 18" LCD flatscreen monitor. Before I set it up, I told my daughter that I was most likely going to give her the LCD as I had heard about color problems etc...

I replaced the 19" tube and found the LCD is great. That combined by the fact that all of sudden I had a desk again made me keep the LCD. she has the 19" tube...

Less heat, no flicker (even when the fan is on), a ton of desk space to put more crap on and some humor... The cat was used to jumping on top of the monitor but got a shock when there was no top... :-) Cat now bugs her..

I've have a new 15" LCD monitor - there are no banding issues.

The only problems there are is a lack of contrast compared to a CRT, there are some slight ghosting problems, and the viewing angles change the perception of the screen.

BUT, if I hadn't been so cheap I could have got a monitor with none of these problems.

Pay for the quality and LCD monitors can be very impressive

(BTW, mine has a really cool pivoting feature, where I can turn the screen from landscape to potrait http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif )

    Hello

I waas talking to a support person from NEC who make very nice LCD displays. He told me that LCDs work best when used with a low refresh. 60HZ is fine. This is the opposite from CRTS , where flicker is a problem. LCDs do not suffer from this.

I actually went and bought a LaCie 19 inch CRT.It is terrific. Very good geometry and colour with a footprint the same as my old 17 inch. I do not think that LCDs are good enough yet for graphics based on photography. The time will come. In the meantime CRTs are best.

Thanks David for the links, my new monitor passed these two tests. I have sent the links off to some other friends as well. Very helpful!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
