I just had the urge to do it this year. My grandfather survived the war and when he was alive I was young and brash and not too interested in hearing about it. Now I can't hear those stories.
I wanted to make something very simple. I also brought out his medals for my children to see. They are the medals that all UK participants received, but they are quite special to us. To my surprise each medal is individually inscribed.
I remember my grandmother asking me why I liked watching the war films on TV. She said she never wanted to watch them. I can understand why. Not only did her husband go to war, a few years later two of her children did too and the other set to work in a coal mine. All survived.
Our family were fortunate, but I can think of those who were not.
