While playing with Richard's technique, I also discovered that while drawing with the mouse, you can alternate between drawing freehand and then pressing the [Alt] key to draw a straight line or [Alt]+[Ctl] keys to draw a straight vertical/horizontal line, and then back to freehand by releasing those keys. All within the same stroke. It's a little hard to explain, so see the attached for a sample.

Also, it can be tricky getting a perfectly vertical/horizontal line with drawing with [Alt]+[Ctl] and releasing those keys. The cursor sometimes seems to "jump" from the ending point.

    Hi Mike,

With xara, the easier the question, the more ways there is to get there. If you make it all the way to ten different ways, then it is a blond question.

Been using that technique for a long time now with the exception that I don't bother with the Ctrl key. If you press the Alt key while drawing you have TOTAL control over the straight line and it's direction, release the Alt key and you will have a Freehand line. Great for tracing over photos containing architecture, which usually has a mix of curves and straight lines.

It's not my technique by the way, it's just one technique that I guess many of us just don't think to use that often! Glad it's getting put out there. Makes the program just that more desireable!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
