Anyone know how to put an animated gif over a still image?
I did it once some time ago but don't remember how.

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.
you and me both Larry - as far as I recall you tick the background box in the frame gallery for the first frame - that means you can only have the back ground in frame one, so if you want the gif to start 'immediately' you need to make the interval between frames one and two as small as practical...

Thank you handrawn, I think I already tried that or something close anyway. As I recall when I did it before I did it in X3D but that won't work in this case because I have a spherical object (the animated ornament) that I want to put on our TG Christmas Tree some year, at least I want to know how if the occasion arises again.

As HD says, just place the static image in layer 1 and tick the Background check box. Place the animation layers below this.
So in the case of the christmas tree example, open up the animated xar file, import the completed tree into a new layer, move to the top & make this the background image. Export as a gif animation.
