Exclamation More free Garamond fonts than you'd ever use!

Mwenz brought this to my attention the other day. This free (huge) family is based on Garamond, and in my opinion, it is one of the cleanest, well-drawn homage fonts I've ever seen. The only things I needed to do to it were to tighten the leading, and to add a few kerning pairs.

Cormorant is a free display type family developed by Christian Thalmann (Catharsis Fonts). It comprises a total of 45 font files spanning 9 different styles (Roman, Italic, Infant, Infant Italic, Garamond, Garamond Italic, Upright Cursive, Small Caps, Unicase) and 5 weights (Light, Regular, Medium, Semibold, Bold).

    SIL Garamond Collection

Particularly welcome and delightful is the "Unicase" version in three weights:

Also, I've not recently seen both a "Regular" and a "Book" version that are truly different weights in a collection. Apparently, the Book version is about 50 units heftier than the regular version. for the sake of measurement comparison, Regular and Book weights are usually 300 for Light, 400 for Book, and 500 for Medium. So the book version is a very comfortable split between normal and medium wight.

If you've had to "rough it" with only 3rd party knockoffs in your collection, I suggest that this expertly cobbled version of Garamond might be your first step toward a truly epic, professional personal typecase.

    Thanks, mwenz!

You're welcome, Gary. And thanks to the person who posted it on another forum else I wouldn't have known about the collection.

Very Nice find! You can also download all 45 font files in a zip at Font Squirrel.com http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/cormorant I also noticed that according to the Git Hub page it may also eventually be available from google fonts which could mean that you may eventually be able to download and install these fonts from right within the Xara font list!

I'll have to read the SIL more carefully; I wonder if it's okay to post my modifications to some of the fonts, the kerning, renaming, and line adjustments that I did.

Thanks for the font tip. The link given by Frances to ......cormorant and seeing the site brought back memories of 1 of a few poems that I memorized from high school days, too many years ago. It's called "On Birds, Bags, Bears and Buns" by Christopher Isherwood. I thought that Gary B would appreciate this and maybe be inspired to illustrate it. I changed a word or two to be as I remembered it:

    The common cormorant or shag
Lays eggs inside brown paper bags.
The reason you will see, no doubt,
It is to keep the lightning out,
    But what these unobservant birds
Have never noticed is that herds
Of wandering bears may come with buns
And steal the bags to hold the crumbs.
