Charles Moir, has mentioned a couple of times that Xara Ltd. currently has no plans to port Xara X for Mac OS.

However, I believe that Windows emulators can be used to a certain extent.

As for the other applications - I haven't seen anything mentioned. But I'm pretty sure that Xara Ltd. would get more bang for the buck, improving their current product offerings.

I've tried using Xara X via an emulator on my Powerbook and it was very very slow.

It has been mentioned in the past by Xara that Xara X is not a good candidate for porting. I'm no programmer so I'm not sure I'm getting the reason correct. Fundamental to Xara X's blazing speed is its 'deeply' coded rendering engine. Apparently it was not deemed very practical to try and translate it for Mac OS9. Things may be a little different with OSX but, as Risto notes, there are apparently no plans to port. I think this is understandable when you realize that Xara has invested more than 40 person-years of coding into Xara X1. That's a lot of effort. A similar effort directed towards OSX would likely be a bad investment given adobe's dominance of OSX graphics programs.

As a Macintosh myself my first three computers were Macs. Once I discovered how much more Xara suited me I switched to a PC. We have an eMac in the house but now I far prefer my old pc.

I think Charles mentioned once they would port it to a mac for $1/2 Million. If you have that much just lying around collecting dust, then xara would do it...

..or if 25,000 members donate $20 each to the cause (and we all get our names on the rather large but tasteful box it ships in!)

If it was rewritten for OS X would it then port easily to other *nix OS's?

I switched to mac about half a year ago, loooove my Mac and Xara is about the only thing I really miss.

Obviously, going head to head with Adobe on the OS X/graphics market isn't a very good option. But how about some sort of plug-ins/add-ons for Adobe software?

So they could for instance offer extra tools (the better bezier curve dor instance http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif ) in Illustrator.

I don't know if it's at all technically possible, but they would be able to enlarge their market without being in direct line of fire from Adobe.

And we Mac-people would get cool Xara-tools(minus the blazing speed of Xara X, off course http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif.

hmmm, i did a little research and there's this plugin for Illustrator: Xtream path that brings some of the bezier functionality from Xara to the Mac http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Rather steep price, but I think I'm probably gonna go for it...

At least it convinced me that plugins can add value to Illustrator and they'll tie me over until Xara might brings something out for Mac http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

What do you guys think? Should Xara, next to their super vector program, bring plugins for other existing programs? To improve their tools/controls? It seems to me that they're in the right spot for it considering their knowledge in user-friendly controls...

Would this be a great extra income source, next to their own package, probably with a lot less programming than a Xara for Mac..? Or would it undermine Xara X1?
