    Hi Tim, your solution of making a thin line and a thick line was spot on and since I've never worked with contour tool before. Contour tool seems to me the require more understanding about all the neat tools of Xara that I have really never had an occasion to use since I am basically a dabbler more than a professional like you good folk. It is a privilege to work under your tutelage.

    You can also unlock the aspect ratio and use the up and down arrows (or input a fixed number) on the width and height to reduce by a set amount.

    It's close, but as Phil said, a line equidistant to an ellipse is not itself an ellipse. The attached shows a wide lined ellipse (in red) over two ellipses that have been widened by the same absolute amount in X and Y. You'll see that they are closer together between the north, south, east and west points, than at those points:
