well I think I see what you mean - the group 'moves apart' as it stretches rather than the object itself stretching..?
had a quick look but cannot pin it down to anything
[checked it in ver 8 - no apparent problems]

Works properly in XDP9 as well.
ok was going to investigate this from scratch, but when I made two quick shape circles in a new file and grouped them, I immediately got the same as you did without going any further - so whatever it is causing it I don't think it's a 'rogue shape' , sure looks like a bug to me, can't get anything much simpler than two plain quickshapes
XDPX10 10.1.1.34966 64bit - windows 8.1
EDIT - if I flip them over, one across the other, they appear to move as expected thenceforth until release mouse, then they come apart again if stretched again .... in case this helps

Yeah I forgot to mention it was in the 64 bit version.
Also when the group is rotated 90°, scaling it with the vertical middle blob doesn't have have this effect

Word from Xara support is that this is not a bug but a web designer feature called Group Squashing. It allows groups like headers and footers to change width with minimal distortion.
There is a way around it by holding the alt key while you drag or there is a registry setting that will permanently disable it. Dragging\EnableGroupSquash to 0.

Autocorrect: It can be your worst enema.
really? - so once again, for the sake of something that should be in options, the illustrators have to press modifiers or change the registry key?
can't say I'm that surprised - seemed a bit of a glaring error to be missed with hindsight
you might like to pass back to Xara that, whilst shift+alt in ver10 appears to do what shift did before, ctrl+alt does not behave like ctrl did as far as I can see
Thanks for the registry key - I'll make a note for future reference
