Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.
The whale is a stack of shapes, one on top of another. The nose is at the top of the stack, the tail sections at the bottom.
The nose follows the mouse. Each shape underneath follows the movement of the shape above in the stack, but with a small delay. This causes the ripple and the movement of the shapes give the illusion of a body flexing.
Each seperate shape is playing follow the leader with the shape above it in the stack. The nose is playing follow the mouse.
It is very effective.
If you look closely you can even see that the tail fins are made up from separate sections - making the tail flexible.
