Three days left before my holday starts... I am almost ashamed to say that about three working day went to create the following pic

The entire image is made in Xara except the "island" in the spaceship. The island I made in Vue d'Esprit. The whole picture started out as a test to se if I could import an vue-picture into xara and use a transparency mask. It worked quite well, and after that I got a little carried away and wanted to create a nice looking planet... and real planet has to have moons... and to get the sun to look real you need a lens flare ...and so on and so on

To create the big planet with swirling clouds I used three circles in different sizes, filled with fractal clouds which I twisted a bit. I placed the biggest circle under and the smallest on top. I also played around with the transparencies of the smaller circles (about 80%-90% transparency, if I remember correctly). After that I applied a 25 step blend between the circles. The transparency of the circles makes the clouds softer. The idea of blending fractal filled circles I originally got from one of Klaus Nordby's images of a planet (can be found at Xara Files Gallery), but I simplified mine to only three circles.
The atmosphere is a blend of two circles and the shadow side of the planet is also a blend of two circles.
The moons are made in a similar matter except using a "cloud blend" I used only one fractal cloud filled circle for the surface.
