Shape Tool and Usage

I must be missing something, or guess I was used to the Corel Shape stuff. I take a rectangle, for instance, convert to editable shapes and F4. I can't seem to get handles to pop out so I can manipulate the shape. What to do? Or where can I find a really good tute on the Shape tool. It's one of the few things I can't seem to grasp. Thanks.

Control handles will only start to appear once you start to change the shape of the sides.
Draw a rectangle with rounded corners and then convert to editable shape, then F4, you will see that the corners now have control handles.
Start to change the sides and you will see other control handles.
