Re: Host & Domain
One of my UK customers uses http://namehog.net/ for domain and hosting. They have an excellent control panel (cPanel brand) running on Linux servers.
cPanel is an easy interface for new webmasters, and Linux servers allow you a bit more control as a newbie too.
This host has different prices for different size accounts, but not being from UK, I can not tell you if the pricing is good or not.
One of the best hosts for customer service that I have worked with is purehost.com
I tend to use a US company from Michigan for accounts I set up: http://TotalChoiceHosting.com which offers a good forum and ticket support for the Windows and Linux servers.
Great up-time, decent customer service and cost for all-inclusive type accounts and again the cPanel interface.
I have an account on a GoDaddy server and it is ok, no problems. But I would not recommend it because the control panel is convoluted (pieces linked together) and the pricing is a-la-carte, ending up costing you more for the basics included already with other hosting options. (Example: statistics, web email, etc).
I think it is best to choose a hosting account with specified limits. You can work within them and know what is expected by your host, keeping your site up and running smoothly.
And just maybe, the host can allocate space better, which might allow them to limit the overloading of servers.
