Well, here is another airplane drawing. I like the P-51 so had to do it.

Suggestion. Make the plane in back slightly blurred. And the shadows under the planes will be darker and sharper in the middle and lighter and less sharp on the outside.

But I quibble. Well done. You care getting very good at this.

Rik, they were actually parked further away than they look,there were 12 P-51's parked side by side at the air show where I took the picture I used as a model. I was so happy with the shot I had to do it in Xara. So, Madalynne to your question, I did use a photo I took as the model. Sometimes what I do is draw a grid on a copy of the photograph and try to copy the picture using a pencil on a piece of plain graph paper. This way I try to practice my free hand drawing by copying the photograph. Then I scan the pencil drawing into Xara, then away I go. Does that make any since? By the way Madalynne, love your work

I asked for a couple of reason, not the least which is because I'm impressed with your image here. However, I noticed a potential issue with your image that I wasn't going to say anything about but Gary pointed it out, and I felt compelled to say something, but I didn't just want to up flat out and give my point of view (in fear of being wrong with my assumption and insulting you). I have worked on drawing from photos (yes a PHOTO, a traditional photo - the purists out there) and I have had this very same issue with my work. Just because the camera is able to capture an image in such a way to that everything is is clear focus, which works great for a photo, but it does make a drawing (like in Xara, like yours, as well as some of my own works) to look a little odd. Gary was correct to point out the blurring of the further plane would improve the look of the image and the reason is simple because the view would expect that and gives the image a more nature look and feel about it - or feel more "realistic".

Yes your explanation makes sense. Here's silly question for you, Why not just scan the photo into the computer and work from that? I can understand the need to freehand draw but if you are going to be working in the computer in the end, why not make that it your end game?
