This is no doubt OT from the OP, but if you really need to 'flatten layers' why not make a raster/bitmap copy of all the selected objects [Edit > Select All (Ctrl+A) then Arrange > Create Bitmap Copy (Shift+Ctrl+C)]. The resulting bitmap could then be sliced, diced, cropped, clipped, or whatever you needed to do before exporting the individual pieces. I don't know if that would work for you but it might be worth a try.
There's also an 'Export image in slices' function [File > Export image in slices (Ctrl+I)]. I've never used it so I don't know how, or if, that would work for what you're trying to do. I guess the only way to find out is to give it a go.
