    Rhanna, thanks.
[AFAIK, "Slice Shape" is equivalent to both "Subtract Shape" or "Intersect shape" but in one operation.]
I was more intersted in how iamtheblues managed to get such a perfect shape without "Subtract Shape" or "Intersect shape" (or "Slice Shape").
In related topic, can you/someone tell me how to go about splitting the attached image into two parts (occupied by the black regions)? The only way I know now is to draw a line through the handles (at the intersections of the black regions) and then "Slice Shape"... Is there a smarter way.

epaalx I've moved your post to a new thread as this question will be better answered if it remains specific.

With your shape, you need to keep in mind the result you are after while you construct it. If you got the shape from someone else, then it would be quite simple to reconstruct it with the finished result in mind, otherwise splitting it with a line and then tidying up the nodes ect will likely take longer.
Below is one pretty quick method.

sledger, thanks... my question is purely about cropping (to extract) rather than re-construction.
Here's how I am doing it now:
    1. Given a shape
    2. draw a line between two shapes - being careful to position the control nodes exactly in the intersection between both black shapes
    3. "Combine Shapes->Slice Shapes" and drag apart.

My issue is with 2 - needing to carefully position the line's end-points to line-up precisely with intersection of both black shapes. I want to know - is there an easier way? Also, if the intersection between shapes wasn't precesily a point but more complex, what's the best/cleanest way to separate the shapes?

You asked about splitting the shape, not cropping away parts of it.
can you/someone tell me how to go about splitting the attached image into two parts
My answer is what I consider a better method to reach your desired result.

    You're right, sorry.

You're creating new shapes, I'm asking about splitting an existing shape.

    Hi

Bob will soon say if I am wrong but in the other thread it looks like he used a quick shape star with rounded points to make the clip view 'starfish' shape

    As far as cropping goes in xtreme there the three ways: boolean [subract intesect slice]; clipview; photo tool;

You need to tell the program somehow where to make the break, so you will need to define the boundaries one way or another

I'm creating a result - it's just another way to succeed.
