If you don't need portability, I'd go for the desktop version every time. They are much friendlier to upgrade and typically have better performance for the cost.
If you need portability then you are stuck with the laptop

I have seen gamers lug desktop systems to lan parties all the time. If you want to game, buy a desktop. Easier and cheaper to modify.
If you want to pay too much for something you can loose in a restraunt or airport then get a laptop. But buy a mouse... Those finger pad things are just a royal pain to use.
I suspect smthjohns real interest was in the advertising links removed by sledger..
since the question is somewhat akin to asking which is best a roadster or a jcb I'd tend to agree
and that's leaving aside the fact that a laptop is a 'personal computer'....

I have yet to find a laptop with a 23" screen...and if I ever do, I doubt it will be very portable.
