What a week! Both my pc's went belly up on the same day.
I took them to the repair shop (35km round trip) to find that
he's on holiday. No indication for how long. His family live in
the northern province of Galicia, and he's usually away for a month.
Semana Santa (Holy Week = Easter) is looming in 3 weeks, and
the Spanish go for it in a big way, so he probably won't be back
until the last week of the month.
So I've reinstalled windows a few times, and of course, reinstalling
lots of software means doing lots of reboots, and after a while
windows won't finish loading. It's a vicious circle.
The latest installation seems to be behaving itself at the moment.
I've installed Acronis True Image, and now hopefully when it all goes
pear-shaped again I'll be able to restore everything without having to
do all the software installs. As I have 2 hard drives in the pc, I have
put windows and software on C: and all data on D:.
Should save a lot of time, too.
Being paranoid, I also have my D: drive backed up externally, and
copies of the True Image on the external drive and the D: drive as
well as in a secure zone on the C: drive.
Running chkdsk didn't find any hard drive errors, so I'm forced into
waiting for the repairman's return to get the memory, cpu
    etc. checked out.
What I don't understand is that windows will load (for a while)
    after it has been reinstalled.
Computers, eh? Can't kill 'em, can't live without them, to paraphrase a
remark I've heard from time to time usually referring to women!
    Saludos,
    Bob.
ps: Blow me down, I press the submit button and the tg server
appears to be down! Other websites load ok.

I've got Acronis installed too and I think you've just panicked me into doing a full back-up this evening

Have you tried running PC Doctor? All Programs >>PC Help and Tools >> PC Doctor 5. Might highlight the problem area(s).

My PC's been running extremely slowly for a few months now. I've been thinking about a full reinstall for a while. I just don't want to do a full re-install.
All my data is already backed up on a second (internal) hard drive, just got to get round to pushing the "Start Again" button.

i dunno i got a new laptop and it was having trouble installing some software so i ran a backup and it copied all my crucial files to my D drive so i have back up for all running systems but i am running Vista so im not sure if XP has that feature, also you could try running norton from administrator (if that is an XP feature, my whole family runs vista so i have no clue) thats how i got ym software to work, right click on the norton shortcut if you can get it and look for an icon that says run as administrator then click on that and it should work fully, thats how i got my software to work
