Make my own fill in photoshop from a bitmap.

Easy,

select the area you want to be the fill with the rectangular marquee.

Then just use "Edit" - "Define Pattern ..."
You'll get a chance to give your fill a name, then it will be available in the fill-gallery.

This goes for PS 6.x, but as far as I remember, it was the same in 5.5 and possibly 5.0

Just to clarify this...

PS5 & 5.5 do not "force" one to save & name the "Defined Pattern" in a collection area.
Only PS6 does this.

PS5+ only require that you select an area to be 'Defined', then do so by applying the menu option DEFINE PATTERN; under the Edit menu.
