Yes I see now, fine for a rectangle, but the same method (select back shape only) doesn't seem to work for a circle or other shape.

Yes it only works with rectangles. The invisible bounding box around a circle or quickshape will clip objects above. Clipview must still be used with other shapes and if you are clipping an object that will be totally within the bounds of your exported area.
However if you export as gif or png with transparency the circle or other shape will clip to it's outline.

Thank you guys,
Clipview was pretty easy after reading the Xara Help file on the subject.
I revamped a couple of things for better clarity and I'm pretty happy with the results.
Thanks for the help,
Jen

99% of what I export is a square or a rectangle... This is a quick and easy method for me. Actually I typically just draw my rectangle overtop the area I want to export then make it transparent and export.

I typically draw a rectangle or square on top. I give it no fill but leave the lines with a visible colour. Then I edit/position/scale that shape as needed to correspond with what I want to export. When I'm ready just that shape is selected and I change it's line colour to none and export the selection.
Should the invisible (no line/no file) shape become unselected I just use the 'quality slider' to dial down to the lowest setting and its easy to reselect it. I then redial up the quality slider to full quality and export etc.
Another tip if you are using a rectangle for such exports (or for clipping) is to turn on snap to grid before drawing the shape. It will make it easier to get the rectangle to the exact size you want using by keying in the size -- it avoids getting partial pixel dimensions.

You can always set the transparency to 99% which is effectively transparent, and yet you can still select the object.
Throwing the "clipping" rectangle on it's own layer is something I do, if I think about it.
The Name Gallery is an ideal tool to be used to easily select 100% transparent objects.
I remember naming items even less often...
