If I download the newer 1780 build, using the auto_packager, will it effect my 1692 install?

Only one way to find out ... I think it probably will, but 1780 is better.
If memory serves, on Linux you must remove the previous version before installing the newer version.

Using the auto package the older version is removed before the new one is installed, all part of the package script.

How is the stability?? I always wait for someone else to try for instabilities..... (nothin like pushin your buddy out into the street to check for on-commin traffic huh??)
I use the "unstable" version and can honestly say its more stable than stable. It also has a few more features. I honestly think that most ppl who use Xaralx on linux use the "unstable" version. Just update dont worry too much
Before I donated my Linux machine, I always used the most recent build rather than the 'stable' release.
The newest features where always in the recent build.

The 1780 build is dead stable on my systems, three. I use heavy graphics and all is fine.
