Thread: Using a Scanner

My scanner (button) is set to scan directly into IrfanView. Then I simply copy and paste into Xara. Very fast.
If I need to crop or resize etc, this is done in IrfanView before the copy'n'paste step.

Being unable to aquire directly in Xara doesn't slow me down any.

I wonder if one of the plugins would do that trick of importing scans?

Jumped in here late, but if you're a scanner dabbler or a pro, don't miss Ed Hamrick's Vuescan (http://www.hamrick.com). Works with some 700 different brands/models.

Essentially you scan to memory or to a file (JPEG, TIFF or PDF). It has a quick, sorta automatic operation and an incredibly rich collection of options and choices. For example, depending on your scanner, for extremely detailed scans, you can opt up to 16 samples for a given file -- Vuescan will take the specified number of samples and merge them. It's a great way to minimize noise.

If your scanner supports it, you can even control focus.

Each version has come with more and more image processing options.

Ed is a perfectionist and his program will NOT use any scanner resolution beyond optical (the market-speak inflated "interpolated" resolutions are ignored).

It's $40 standard, $80 pro. The latter allows RAW scans, plus (if you have the calibration files and equipment) the ability to make pinpoint IT8 and ICC calibration files. Pro also gives you unlimited free upgrades.

    Dave
