I would agree with what others here have said about using aids such as photos, tracing, camera obscura etc. They are not cheating under normal circumstances.
Having said that, the ability to draw from life is a very valuable skill for computer artists to acquire, even if they don't use it all the time. It helps develop the ability to see line, design, and composition in the real world and lay out this 3-D vision on a flat surface in a convincing manner.
Also, I find that a tremor in my hand makes it harder for me to draw on a slippery tablet than with a pencil on a piece of paper.
