Thanks fellas. It was mostly created in Xtreme. The hard part was working out the linkages between the various 'arms', so there was a lot of 'arcs of movement' that were also exported from Xtreme but not visible on the final swf.
Raymond, no it was drawn in Xtreme and exported into Flash. In fact I think it would be extremely difficult to do as a gif, trying to keep each relevant part aligned with the other parts (with no tweening) would lead to a great amount of frames as well as patience.
