There are several ways to make a selection. There is a magic wand tool. You can set a tolerance and wheter the selection is confined to where you make the selection, or select over the entire image. Maybe a good choice.
Auto Select is under the Select menu.
In either case, you may need to manually erase the edges of the image. If your image is on a transparent background, you should be able to erase to transparency.
You might be able to select and erase what you have already done. Say you select the additional white areas. Then delete them of erase. Erase would be confined to the selection. Ctrl D removes the selection.
