Default Knocking out the background in Gifs

Right now when I scan an image in and save it as a transparent gif I still have to use the convert to editable shape and remove the white background. I'm usually using the image to drop on top of other images and I don't want a white background. This is quite tedious and on some images with a lot of detail very time consuming.

Is there a better way to do this? I've tried the trace features but it doesn't always work and when it does there's still a lot of clean up.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi Texjd,

The easiest way I have discovered so far is by simply applying a stained glass transparency with 0% transparency and exporting as a GIF. The side affect of this is a slight dimming of the colours in the picture and for some reason there is also a smattering of white around the edges of the image as the example below shows. But if you're laying this image over the top of others it might not be visible but it also can be very visible. Hope this helps,
