The edges were erased using Blending Mode Erase in Expression. I used a grayscale stroke in this case.
AutoFX Photographic Edges has a capability, too.
You might mention your available applications to see if it is possible what something you have.

Don't know what software you are using but Alien Skin Xenofex 2 has a "Burnt Edges" feature which may be helpful?

Manny -- you might also find this mini-tutorial useful. It is for Xara but similar approach could be used in some other programs.
