    Default centering objects?

Just wondering what is the best method to center objects to say the page width? just guides, and lining up handles? any methods?

In the alignment dialog you can change "selection" to "page" and align any object to top, bottom. cente, etc. of the page.

Yes to all those methods, it is a bit old fashion and in someways crude but it works. It would be nice to keep the menu up on the page, without docking as you lose so much drawing space, as when you press apply you lose the menu.

By the way the short cut is "Shift + ctrl + L"
    Design is thinking made visual.

Here's another useful tip: Click on the image of the shapes in the dialogue. Also try shift and control clicking in different regions. It can save some time when aligning.

Surely, the Object Alignment dialog is always available and doesn't disappear when 'Apply' is clicked? It's also not dockable, only Galleries are dockable at the moment.

This is from the Xara Xone TIPS page 7.

Object Alignment TIP: Xara’s Object Alignment dialog (Arrange > Alignment...) gives you a quick way to align a selection of objects. The four colored shapes in the preview window show how the selected objects will align when you press Align.

(Left) Click in any of the nine locations indicated and objects will align as indicated by the icons.

(Center) Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the top, center of bottom to vertically align objects top, center, or bottom.

(Right) Hold down the Shift key and click left, center, or right to align objects horizontally left, center, or right. In addition selecting the Selection Bounds (the default setting) aligns objects within the selection. Selecting the Page option aligns the selection to the bounds of the page size. And selecting Spread aligns the selection to the bounds of the two page spread.
The elementys in the preview window align to represent how the items will align when you click in these areas.

Also, I think your question was how to center something in the center of the page? In the Align dialog there are 3 options, Selection Bounds (the default), Page, which centers the selection on the page, and Spread which centers the selection between two pages when you have specified a 2-page spread.
