In the discussion below an idea for a mini application came up.

See the discussion re: Need more beveling opitons
    http://www.talkgraphics.com/showthread.php?t=8253

Many times when I have to create vector logo from a poor bitmap logo downloaded from the Web, I have to identify or try an match the font used.

Often, a few specific characters are key to making that identification.

Could an mini application be written whch would take text in the clipboard and display it in the a scrolling window using all the fonts installed on the user's PC?

This way it would be much easier to compare the display window with fonts shown in user's manual (like the Xara or Corel manuals) or a catalog of fonts.

    Make sense?

    Regards, John

    John -

If I understand your question correctly, I think applications already exist that do what you want. Take a look at AMP Font Viewer (http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/FontViewer.php) or The Font Thing (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html) for instance. Each provides a full-page listing of installed and not-installed fonts using a text string of the user's choice. There are other free font utilities listed at http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/gmm/fwfont.html.

    Peter,

    Thanks for the lead.

Have you used FontViewer? Is it "safe"; not malicious?.

    John -

If you're refering to the AMP Font Viewer I listed above, then yes, I have installed it, but only just recently. I have not had any troubles as a result. The utility is listed by two sites that I have come to trust over the years (snapfiles.com and nonags.com) as well.

The Font Thing is a very nice program also, and highly recommended in various places on the internet, but it locked up a couple of times on me (which may be a result of it being designed for earlier versions of Windows - I use XP), hence my trial of the AMP Font Viewer as a substitute. So far I'm happy with the replacement and you can't beat the price!

    Thanks again Peter.

Egg mentioned in another thread that Xara3D could be used as well.
