by simple rotate & stretching
it is able to place second in first & & & .....

by moving it can be done pattern like this

And another to enhance the results with Xara X:

-give a name to each shape before duplicating the whole object,
-apply an elliptical fill to each one and rotate the handles to fit its ratio.

Afterwards you will be able to select all kind of part separately and change the fills, even replacing them by bitmaps.
