FONT Frustration

Can any of you direct me to a font utility that will print a listing or catalog of all available system fonts?

Does the Font Gallery not do enough? It does a font preview (albeit just a few characters), but it is a fast, WYSIWYG, anti-aliased preview, in the right font, of all the system fonts that are available. And it includes a font installer / uninstaller. I've always thought that one of the more slick parts of Xara X. A lot easier to use to view, and select fonts, than the font drop-down list.

On the other hand if you want something to automatically print a listing of your fonts. or a more full showing of the character set, then I would suggest that's beyond the scope of Xara X.

The font gallery in Xara X IS pretty slick. I had not used it until you pointed it out ... and I stand corrected. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

While it does not give a "preview" of the text you are typing in the selected font ... it does show a representative "preview" of that font. I like the way the gallery remains open so I can apply several different fonts to my text before making a final selection. And while the "jump to first letter" function of most pull down font lists is not present ... the slide bar on the gallery offers relatively quick access.

One function of the font gallery I would like to see is custom folders which enable Xara users to organize and group fonts in their own way.

The gallery I most use is 'all installed fonts' but there are times where I would like to group/separate fonts by job. I would like to be able to create and delete my own font folders.

I would also ask that there be an option for embedding fonts within the Xara file so other xara users can see files correctly.

Simply type your text in your project, select it, go to the font gallery and double click on the font you want to apply to your text. The font gallery will stay up and you can scroll thru your fonts and try them out until you get the results you are looking for!

Some time ago I was also looking for a utility such you are looking for. I wanted something in which I could view a phrase in a number of different fonts so I could pick what produced the best result, or to replicate the text for an advert.

In my searching I came across The Font Thing (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html) and I use it on fairly frequent occasions and it has paid off.

You can type your text and you will see it in whatever fonts you have selected in the left side panel. These can be either installed or not. I have a directory with 1120 TT fonts which are not installed and I can view them in those fonts or I can select to view them in the installed fonts. You can set the size in which the text is displayed up to 128pt and you can also select between different types of fonts, e.g. sans, serif, script, decorative, pictorial etc. It'll also dsplay the full character set of a font and also display the specification of a font as well. Oh, I almost forgot, you can also select collections of fonts. The only downside for me is that it only works with TTF.

Best of all, it costs nothing, its FREEWARE. I would strongly suggest you give it a try - I don't think you'll be disappointed. I know I'm not, its a real gem in my arsenal of utilities.
