With that tool one can exactly specify which application will open a file with a specific extension. Or one can chang how the file will be handled by Windows.
You ask a lot of questions, Handrawn. It might be discouraging for users to help each other if one has to explain every suggestion.
if an offered solution is genuine, then no-one will mind it being queried
does it work for this issue? - have you tested it and verified

@Michael, OK, I took a punt and on checking the detail, I was sure I could screw things up very easily. I consider myself to be highly Windows literate and I would not let anyone I cared for loose with this utility on my system.
The developer's Disclaimer indicates the same, as does:
I think @Egg might be safer (relatively) in examining Registry Key: Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\XaraX.Document\shell\op en\command.If FileTypesMan crashes or hangs on your system...
Mine has a (default) entry of C:\PROGRA~1\Xara\XARADE~4\DESIGN~1.EXE "%1":
- ~1 in PROGRA is "Program Files" and ~2 is probably "Program Files (x86)"
- ~4 in XARADE is saying the fourth sub-folder
- ~1 in DESIGN is the first instance of design(erpro).exe.
- %1 is the file to be run that is an XaraX.Document that has associated extension xar.
- All very DOS; and this is my location for XaraDesignerPro+/DesignerPro.exe.
Egg is probably getting something like C:\PROGRA~1\Xara\XARADE~3\17\DESIGN~1.EXE "%1" instead [The #3 is a guess].
I would rather backup and restore my Registry rather than rely on another's free product that has no recovery action.
In passing, @handrawn is right to question as the potential for mucking-up is probable not unlikely and the impact is very high.

thanks for looking into this acorn, I didn't have the time....
pretty sure the way to fix this is via the registry
very sure indeed that handrawn is very wary of free apps that tinker in the registry with no redress

Firstly let me thank everyone for their input. Unfortunately much of it goes above my head and whilst members are suggesting software and also registry hacks (of which I appreciate)
1: I don't like messing with the registry
2: I'm not keen on software messing with my registry
The main point is that none of such tweaking should be required. If I decide to change a jpg file from loading in Affinity Designer it should be a simple step in Windows 10 to change the program to alter this.
Xara isn't doing this. It appears to load a jpg into xar Designer 17.
I have set it to load in Xara Designer Pro+. It doesn't !!!
It shouldn't be necessary to jump all these hoops.
I'll put a ticket in.
