Okay we can all breathe again, if anyone was holding their breath that is. I opened a command prompt as administrator and ran this little miracle: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Designer Pro X\17\XaraDLLs\XarThumb64.dll" and once the PC had restarted and thought about for a moment or two, thumbnails had returned.

I was confused when you mentioned thumb.dll and not Thumb64.dll, otherwise I would have suggested regsrv32 as well.
What i don't know is why you needed it in the first place.

A Run as administrator ought to have done it all automatically.
