I opened a command prompt as administrator and ran this little miracle: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Designer Pro X\17\XaraDLLs\XarThumb64.dll" and once the PC had restarted and thought about for a moment or two, thumbnails had returned.
